Made 4 Math Monday #1
Recently, I have been noticing a common post on a lot of the math blogs that I follow: Made 4 Math Monday. Made 4 Math Monday (aka M4MM) was the great idea of @pamjwilson and @druinok. I think it originated on Twitter, but it has invaded math blogs in the past month. After reading up about it, I decided that I want to be part of it! So, here's my first Made 4 Math Monday post!
I really want to use more centers and games this coming school year. So I created an "Operations with Integers Review Game". (I think it will be really useful after creating a foldable and quickly reviewing integer rules with my Algebra I students during the first week of school.) To set up the center, you'll need some dice, pencils, scrap paper, and the scorecards. I printed my scorecards on white paper, cut them out, then glued them to colorful card stock. I plan on laminating the scoreboards before school starts. (If you laminate them too you'll also need dry erase markers at the center.)
There are nine rounds in the game. Each round has a rule (such as "Sum must be positive"). Students will roll the dice as many times as it takes to get an answer that follows the rule. They will record the amount of tries on their scorecard. After all nine rounds, the student with the lowest score wins. I have a ton of blank dice in my classroom. I'm going to use red and green sharpies to write different integers on each. I want to make it a little more challenging than just positive and negative 1-6.
I can't wait to let my students play this game in September!

Thank you! I can use it for my review at the beginning of the year. What numbers will you put on the dice?
ReplyDeleteI think I will use positive and negative 2, 4, 6, 10, 15, and 20. This way, all of the Round Rules are possible, but it's a little more challenging than just 1 to 6. Hope your students like the game!
DeleteWhat a cool idea for a station/center! Thanks for sharing and joining in #made4math! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! Made 4 Math Monday is a wonderful idea!
DeleteWhat a creative activity! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI was just given an additional teaching assignment alongside Science..Accelerated Math for a small group of 7th graders and I was desperate for ideas and ways to make math less scary and overwhelming and more fun and creative. I just want to tell you how HAPPY I am that I found your blog..this is exactly the kind of stuff I want to use/do in my class. So, thank you for blogging and sharing your ideas!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you found some inspiration from my blog! Good luck with your math class!
DeleteThis is awesome. Thank you! I do an activity with dice and integers, and this will help me tweak that activity. I love the ways each round is specific of what you want the student to get.
ReplyDeleteI do this, but use cards. The suits are perfect since there are two red (negative) and two black (positive) suits. You can either leave the face cards in or create "slip covers" for interesting numbers of your choice. If students finish early they can play multiplication war with the deck. :)
