GamesI love to incorporate fun stuff like games as often as possible into my lessons. When students play learning games in class, they feel like they aren't even doing math. This year, I created a collection of games called GRAB IT<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">!</span> Currently, I have five GRAB IT<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">!</span> games all about solving equations.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggIWyp5XiJnyVSZ1oLpr7UhUu1NqdOIDqaWKHUN1Y_vDqI5mM3g5biCHSegQgRCkRaJ0r1gq14OveXtMuUmf5VnQDxkosVdLYiUkgnwiMV6UrLwkiTMmQbgvT8t22ZpQN54Hsr6pWTPkNe/s1600/IMG_0377.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggIWyp5XiJnyVSZ1oLpr7UhUu1NqdOIDqaWKHUN1Y_vDqI5mM3g5biCHSegQgRCkRaJ0r1gq14OveXtMuUmf5VnQDxkosVdLYiUkgnwiMV6UrLwkiTMmQbgvT8t22ZpQN54Hsr6pWTPkNe/s640/IMG_0377.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
GRAB IT<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">!</span> is a competitive two player game. Students work quickly to solve different equations with the same answer. Once they solve their equation, they race to "grab" the correct answer before their opponent does. Each game contains ten questions, plus a tiebreaker if needed. GRAB IT<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">!</span> has become a big hit in my classroom. Students get excited when I tell them we are going to play.<br />

I know that it has been years (<i>literally <b>years</b></i>), but I am back to share some new ideas with you! I am still teaching 7th grade math, 8th grade math, and Algebra I.<br />
<br />
I wanted to start off by sharing what I do to celebrate Pi Day (<i>3/14</i>) with my math students. It's such a fun day in my classroom. I start off by having a Pi Quiz/Contest. Students need to memorize the first two decimal numbers of pi for the quiz. Everything after that is part of the contest. It amazes me how many digits some kids can remember!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjtLmiOBJVYD0rH5w42WHzc3t0wknmZTkSGi2KoqYu2pq-mHCEQCzAVKv7r-9TRvN8AqsD3OvGAA8-JtJ58PmBKK07-nyU6o8BuIjJ-Aj6CTZZjoDXEoFTKTkGW7lzevwoH3M9X0qccHJN/s1600/Capture+2019-03-13+091127.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="487" data-original-width="922" height="169" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjtLmiOBJVYD0rH5w42WHzc3t0wknmZTkSGi2KoqYu2pq-mHCEQCzAVKv7r-9TRvN8AqsD3OvGAA8-JtJ58PmBKK07-nyU6o8BuIjJ-Aj6CTZZjoDXEoFTKTkGW7lzevwoH3M9X0qccHJN/s320/Capture+2019-03-13+091127.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After that, we derive pi using circular food. The kids (<i>obviously</i>) love this. My only rule is that they finish the worksheet BEFORE eating anything. We use rulers and yarn to measure the diameter and circumference of each food item, then divide to (<i>hopefully</i>) find a number close to pi. Students do this three times and then write what they observe. (<i>If you do not want to use food items, you can just use circles.</i>)<br />

Between work and personal commitments, September was packed<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> I'm hoping things will calm down during the next two weeks so I can get back to normal posting here <i>(and on <a href="http://cookbookmeals.com/">cookbookmeals.com</a>)</i>.<br />
<br />
I don't have a math related post today. I just wanted to share a few pictures. I spent this past Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in the Poconos with my 8th graders. It's an annual trip at <a href="http://www.peec.org/" target="_blank">PEEC</a>. This was my 8th or 9th trip <i>(Sorry, I've lost track)</i>. The kids really have a great time. We do team building, hike, canoe, have animal presentations, etc. We even have a square dance<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> They learn some great things about the environment, but also about teamwork and cooperation. If you are in the Pocono area, you should definitely look into it!<br />

Well, I received my gift recently. Nope, scratch that, I received my <b>gifts</b> recently. So many gifts I couldn't even believe it<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> My "Santa" was so amazingly generous, I am in shock! I hope that some of you participated in the program too; it really is wonderful! Here's my story...<br />
<br />
When my "Santa" and I were matched, I immediately received a message from him saying: "I got you everything on your Amazon wishlist that was shipped from
Amazon. The only things I didn't include were those items that came from
another vendor. My Mom's a high school teacher in Texas. You should be
proud of what you're doing. Enjoy the school supplies<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>"<br />
<br />
I could not believe my eyes! <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/25CPWJFA7DPKF/ref=topnav_lists_2" target="_blank">My list</a> was pretty extensive. I was expecting just a couple of items from it, not every single thing that shipped from Amazon<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!!</span> But, sure enough, I started to receive <b>box after box</b> in the mail. Everyday was like Christmas<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!!</span><br />

<br />
I received so many essentials, including scissors for the kids,
markers, Post-it notes, Post-it flags and tabs, binder dividers,
highlighters, dry erase markers, and lead for pencils. I also received 6
packages of colored paper, which will help so much with my students'
interactive notebooking<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> He also sent 3 different storage items for my
classroom <i>(including a colorful one on wheels which I am super excited
about<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!!</span>)</i>. Finally, I received 8 boxes of tissues, which should
definitely last us through cold and flu season. You can also read about my experience <a href="http://redditgifts.com/gallery/gift/overwhelmed-generosity-1/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

Isn't it amazing?<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> Thank you so much to my Reddit "Santa"<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> I am utterly grateful <i>(and my students will be too)</i><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> I wish I knew your Reddit user name to publicly thank you<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!!</span><br />
<br />
My husband also participated in the gift exchange as a Santa. He was matched with a music teacher and sent her lots of great music posters to decorate her room as well as tissues. <i>(He couldn't believe both she and I asked for them<span style="font-family: inherit;">! I told him there are never enough tissues in a classroom<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span></span>)</i> I hope she was as happy with her gifts as I am<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />

I was with my homeroom for half of the day giving out what seemed literally like a billion forms <i>(can't wait to collect them all tomorrow<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i>. I only got to meet with my math classes for 28 minutes each. I went over my student contract with them and gave out their workbooks. I'm only seeing them for tomorrow and Friday for the same amount of time too. I hope to collect their contracts and give them their textbooks tomorrow.<br />
<br />
I pretty much finished my room yesterday. There are a few posters that I would still like to hang up. I need to figure out where though. Here's what my room looks like from my desk:<br />

<i>(Ignore all of the boxes in the front. They are my new books that I need to give out.)</i></div>
<br />
After stumbling across this post via Pinterest, I decided to implement my own "Great Supply Challenge" this year. I'm hoping it will help keep the supplies <b>IN</b> my classroom. To start, I number each Seat Sack.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJLpdywg4Ad8Dm-8iLU3JXpToIrEa2tXRIGdNrv702MbMnkV5gcUalDBpXFeymHeKBdmyrcDFQ0Slcg8KOclq4ruWqE7s-m1AXRPksPIi6Y2FQwlPuVqPIJz10xEtg9g2nIz-UUVZfGElU/s1600/class+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJLpdywg4Ad8Dm-8iLU3JXpToIrEa2tXRIGdNrv702MbMnkV5gcUalDBpXFeymHeKBdmyrcDFQ0Slcg8KOclq4ruWqE7s-m1AXRPksPIi6Y2FQwlPuVqPIJz10xEtg9g2nIz-UUVZfGElU/s400/class+3.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I also numbered all of the glue sticks and scissors inside of my black and white containers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZk1XA_fIGRcoPOV_ZIZdb94MwDvl4wHkpZJgSVrqF8x39xmPGQECVH2NasCduRtXIhGbMunITrUu9bGjxieFiNUltouzGzjLc-Hg2Dl7B4TeH6mpxAMdQOwJNxSWPWmT6SiD7dI-VO7ej/s1600/class+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZk1XA_fIGRcoPOV_ZIZdb94MwDvl4wHkpZJgSVrqF8x39xmPGQECVH2NasCduRtXIhGbMunITrUu9bGjxieFiNUltouzGzjLc-Hg2Dl7B4TeH6mpxAMdQOwJNxSWPWmT6SiD7dI-VO7ej/s400/class+5.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDwEWGjI0uPiYrykr6gyZOI7xv3GM4tAJ2X7s0ca8_3k5irF4W56_VcNVTFXZnygM8xIaJCjrftrUAEIG7KKSzN4qU8d-8Fij6qj4wjUxzREjUCcxEyIP3GvqncgwhqfAucGQ5AXnVDO9I/s1600/class+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDwEWGjI0uPiYrykr6gyZOI7xv3GM4tAJ2X7s0ca8_3k5irF4W56_VcNVTFXZnygM8xIaJCjrftrUAEIG7KKSzN4qU8d-8Fij6qj4wjUxzREjUCcxEyIP3GvqncgwhqfAucGQ5AXnVDO9I/s400/class+4.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I found <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/classroom-numbers-free-printables-251654" target="_blank">these very cute numbers</a> on TpT <i>(for free<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i> and am in the process of getting them laminated. I will attach one to each container and each desk. I explained to the kids today that they will basically be a "team" with the students who sit at the same desk in my other classes. I will conduct periodic <i>"check-ins"</i>. As long as the only things in their containers at the time of the check are the correctly numbered supplies and the only thing in their Seat Sack is their Warm Up Notebooks, then they will win a small prize.<br />

<br />
Anyway, I did a little work this weekend to help get back into the swing of things. One of the things that I did was create yet another resource for combining like terms. It's a skill that comes up in my first unit with 7th graders, and it's a really important one, so I feel the more resources you have, the better<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
This puzzle is very similar to my <a href="http://msmathmadness.blogspot.com/2013/08/fraction-decimal-and-percent-puzzles.html" target="_blank">Fraction, Decimal, and Percent Puzzles</a>. There are 21 puzzles, each containing 2 equivalent expressions and a simplified answer. I made sure to use a variety of positive and negative terms so kids can practice adding and subtracting integers while they do this. I also used a combination of two- and three-term expressions. It will be a good center activity and/or game. I created a recording sheet as well as an answer key. I'm hoping my students will enjoy the activity.<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures:<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
I was a little sad because someone put a box on my construction paper holder <i>(which is only made out of cardboard)</i>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh69I8k1Pjou6FN8lP4X3KOLCtZftqxMQ0mR35-08DzVo2I7tpIxCRLvzcjrQqGU5VCNEiMDDPA_Ps6736O_3o9uywj5fBXUTrjlupqAFvS9xXohcY4CP69Td69NjXlDIkqKAp1UK4vF5cz/s1600/back+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh69I8k1Pjou6FN8lP4X3KOLCtZftqxMQ0mR35-08DzVo2I7tpIxCRLvzcjrQqGU5VCNEiMDDPA_Ps6736O_3o9uywj5fBXUTrjlupqAFvS9xXohcY4CP69Td69NjXlDIkqKAp1UK4vF5cz/s1600/back+2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I turned it upside down though and put books in it to straighten it back out. I think it will survive<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
After going through all the boxes of books and supplies, I tackled my posters. I'm so excited to say that in my 9 years, today was the <b>fastest </b>I have ever hung my posters<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> Using Velcro dots last year <b>really </b>paid off<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> Nothing fell at all during the school year and rehanging everything was a breeze this year. I totally recommend using Velcro to hang stuff! <i>(I just wish it didn't take me 8 years to figure it out<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i><br />
<br />
Seriously, all of the dots you see in my pictures like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Turned to this in a matter of minutes:<br />
<br />

<br />
If you do go with Velcro, make sure you number or label your posters and toppers when you take them down. Take pictures too so you remember exactly where everything goes.<br />
<br />
I also set up my desks today and hung containers for glue sticks and scissors on each one. I'm headed back tomorrow to organize some more and hopefully make copies for the first day next week. How is everyone else's setup going?<br />

<br />
I've been <b>waiting</b> and <b>hoping </b>and <b>praying </b>that RedditGifts would do their Teacher Exchange again this year. And they finally posted about it today<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> I <a href="http://msmathmadness.blogspot.com/2012/08/reddit-gifts.html" target="_blank">posted about it</a> last year, but after the signup deadline <i>(sorry<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i>. It really is a wonderful program. Basically, you signup with RedditGifts. You then create a wishlist <i>(I use amazon.com for mine)</i>. You post a little about yourself, your school, and your link to your wishlist. Eventually, you get matched with a donor. In a few weeks, you'll receive a package with some of the supplies you wished for<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> It's such a great idea, and people are so generous to help us teachers out. It really puts a smile on my face<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
Check it out <a href="http://redditgifts.com/exchanges/redditgifts-teachers-2013/" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

While the concept at first can be difficulty for many <i>(especially when there are positive AND negative terms involved<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i>, all of the activities I created and found really seemed to help. One of the activities was my Combining Like Terms Dice Activity. Basically, each student got a pair of dice. Each die had 6 like terms on it. Students rolled the dice twice and recorded their results in the blank boxes on the worksheet. I then had them highlight like terms in the same color.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh57UgSDaqwjcj42-1-LaNIfrxh1f3MSrqArigvMK-3bDxThoeMcgv4ZhIalHgR5f2uLqCY2HKLukGQOZGvUQJspJ8syCJRfYGL4HUJKEewZmf7SVvPLV9FY4zy2rG5qDBrLSPsE4is4x9c/s1600/clt+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh57UgSDaqwjcj42-1-LaNIfrxh1f3MSrqArigvMK-3bDxThoeMcgv4ZhIalHgR5f2uLqCY2HKLukGQOZGvUQJspJ8syCJRfYGL4HUJKEewZmf7SVvPLV9FY4zy2rG5qDBrLSPsE4is4x9c/s1600/clt+1.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After they highlighted, they wrote a simplified expression <i>(aka they combined the like terms)</i> on the line next to the boxes. They then repeated the process three more times.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCZ76iW2KtmpN6PMvanNFk6z011y6ptzBLzFcYZbXao5umyULFTmMRsAE60rITNpbPh0uZDTMvF2ZwutvDmzB07_qWNlknYvEMRlLkKUd1uaRHcwN0vktFG8ByXE_siJGKlWkVWV8NM_XJ/s1600/clt+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCZ76iW2KtmpN6PMvanNFk6z011y6ptzBLzFcYZbXao5umyULFTmMRsAE60rITNpbPh0uZDTMvF2ZwutvDmzB07_qWNlknYvEMRlLkKUd1uaRHcwN0vktFG8ByXE_siJGKlWkVWV8NM_XJ/s1600/clt+2.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdIdRUZ0HHy23g4rAeyvecMOtlRA7NY8EAhe3VVxOTTOfqc6VmAP5IE6PaSRIJ0YwTLY-O8k5VXSboyFClcBza79anS5qY3ui-zqMVZT7mJEe-dsTqPNkP9VYnYSGLYLJrSkGfnR7ZR8va/s1600/clt+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdIdRUZ0HHy23g4rAeyvecMOtlRA7NY8EAhe3VVxOTTOfqc6VmAP5IE6PaSRIJ0YwTLY-O8k5VXSboyFClcBza79anS5qY3ui-zqMVZT7mJEe-dsTqPNkP9VYnYSGLYLJrSkGfnR7ZR8va/s1600/clt+3.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>

If your students are struggling, you could also do this activity with just one like term <i>(instead of two)</i>. This year I plan on creating more like term dice so that negatives are involved in the activity. If you like the activity, you can get it at my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Combining-Like-Terms-Dice-Activity-292742" target="_blank">TpT store</a> or my <a href="http://www.teachersnotebook.com/product/KatieKim/combining-like-terms-dice-activity#" target="_blank">TN store</a><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />

In fact, I'm already counting the days until we go back next year<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
Now that I'm back though, it's pretty much crunch time. While I don't officially go back to school until September 3rd, I know these last few weeks of summer are going to fly by<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> I spent the day <i>(when I wasn't unpacking and doing laundry)</i> creating a 3-piece puzzle template and then a Fraction, Decimal, and Percent Puzzle. I'm going to print the puzzles in color on card stock and have them laminated. This way, they will <i>(hopefully)</i> last a long time. I think the puzzle will be a good review for my 8th graders early in September, specifically during the first 3 half days when there's not a lot of time to get much done in class. And, they will be very useful for my 7th graders when we get to the percents unit later on in the year.<br />
<br />
I made 21 different colorful puzzles, along with answer sheets for students to record their answers. This could be a good center activity. I also am thinking I could have the students race to finish first <i>(with correct answers of course)</i>. Here's some pictures:<br />

I have a strict 10 points off per day policy <i>(which I wish would prevent lateness better<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i>, yet still, some kids just can't seem to get their acts together. I usually keep a post-it on my desk with the list of students who are late, but it really isn't the best system.<br />
<br />
So, I created a form to keep myself more organized when collecting late projects. I also hope it will give the student more accountability, since he or she will have to fill it out and sign it. I plan on stapling the form to the actually assignment once it's <strike>finally</strike> handed in. This way, there is no confusion on how many points off the student will get <i>(and no arguing the deduction either, from the student OR the parents<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i>.<br />
<br />
Here's my form:<br />

I usually have repeat offenders too (as I'm sure you do as well<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>). I don't even collect homework. I just go around the room, making sure that every student has it and show their work. If they do, they get a 2. If they don't show their work, they get a 1. And if they don't have anything they of course get a 0. I don't accept late homework because I post the answers on the Smartboard and we go over any questions, so you either have it or you don't. As long as my students just <b>try</b>, they can have a 100% in homework for the marking. Yet, for whatever reason, some just don't realize that homework is 15% of their final grade and not doing it can really affect their average. It's very frustrating to me...<br />
<br />
For this coming school year, I've created a form for kids to fill out whenever they don't have their homework. This will <i>(hopefully)</i> make them more accountable. I'm going to print the slips on brightly colored paper and
leave them in a bin on my table at all times. Anytime a student does not have homework, I'm going to have that student get a slip
and fill out his or her name, math class, date, and what the assignment was.
Then, I'll have him or her check off the reason for not having the homework
completed and sign it. The slip also has a reminder to add a missing homework to their grade sheet in their notebook. I'm going to place the slip in the student's personal file as
documentation of the missed assignment <i>(which will be very helpful during a parent-teacher conference<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i>. Here's what it looks like:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRXizdjEZSUqhQ0-EFxSHglGHD91YG4lsFxhq9s6mw3aj4hCJ3zDHzwXD18HGXkN-dBWTaUJ8_BSPX0D56j4yqrhaRTqRcSQsvZ7SgrOBf6C2ljhcfSta6ok4znfYId75ASI8c33de9XCE/s1600/Math+Missing+Homework+Slip-page-0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRXizdjEZSUqhQ0-EFxSHglGHD91YG4lsFxhq9s6mw3aj4hCJ3zDHzwXD18HGXkN-dBWTaUJ8_BSPX0D56j4yqrhaRTqRcSQsvZ7SgrOBf6C2ljhcfSta6ok4znfYId75ASI8c33de9XCE/s1600/Math+Missing+Homework+Slip-page-0.jpg" height="640" width="492" /></a></div>
<br />
I have a slightly more general version <i>(so it can be used for any subject)</i> in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Missing-Homework-Slip-804182" target="_blank">TpT store</a> and in my <a href="http://www.teachersnotebook.com/product/KatieKim/missing-homework-slip" target="_blank">TN store</a>.<br />
<br />
I'm also hoping to encourage more homework completion this year by rewarding the whole class when they have they have 100% completion. I'm thinking of using the letters "HOMEWORK" for each class (an idea I got from <a href="http://teach123-school.blogspot.com/2012/05/homework-incentive.html" target="_blank">here</a>). <i>(I'm just going to use a notebook file on my Smartboard to keep track.)</i> Every time the class has 100%, they get a letter. Once the class spells homework, the whole class gets a no homework night. I'm not sure yet if they will need to just have 8 days of 100% or 8 days <u><b>in a row</b></u> in order to get the reward. What do you think??<br />

I decided to go with a 4-tab foldable. This was also my first attempt at creating a double-sided foldable, with information already printed inside the tabs. I was very happy with how it turned out<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
The first tab contains a place for students to write that a and b are the legs and that c is the hypotenuse, which is always the longest side. There is also a picture of a right triangle with a, b, and c labeled. This is where I have the kids write the equation.<br />
<br />
The second tab is where the kids write down how to find a hypotenuse and complete an example. The third tab is where they write down how to find a leg, along with an example. For both of these I use a sort of chant...I go around chanting and chanting until they can chant back to me. For finding the hypotenuse it's: <b>"Square them, add them, take the square root<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>"</b> For finding the leg, it's the same except instead of add it's subtract. Through the years I've found that making it a chant really helps the kids remember the steps.<br />
<br />
The last tab is where they write down the converse of the theorem and some common Pythagorean triples. Here's what the foldable looks like in an actual notebook:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUr9YQ5ToyWJ7oQ9N_TQi4S8QL54WOkQ7TSeXxE36mA0IAm7YS_D-IpObt1vH0KKLvvjKCW8SP47LQ60U1m-tS3e8v2D-qJKMwhUII_uv22Q8iuWXbxgZRPs6cWLaGPzXxPGXbw6GjpUZN/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUr9YQ5ToyWJ7oQ9N_TQi4S8QL54WOkQ7TSeXxE36mA0IAm7YS_D-IpObt1vH0KKLvvjKCW8SP47LQ60U1m-tS3e8v2D-qJKMwhUII_uv22Q8iuWXbxgZRPs6cWLaGPzXxPGXbw6GjpUZN/s1600/photo+2.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Next year, I won't use red paper. It's a little dark, especially if your students write in pencil.<br />
<br />
If you like it, you can get the foldable in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pythagorean-Theorem-Foldable-610425" target="_blank">TpT store</a>. On my to-do list is to create corresponding problems for students to glue into the next page for practice.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 22px;">Here are Elizabeth's questions and my answers:</span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">1. Why do you blog? </span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;">It's a way for me to share what I do in my classroom. I love interacting with other teachers <i>(through comments)</i> to hear their ideas.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
2. Do you have a TpT/TN store? If so, which did you do first, blog or store? </span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Yes I have both a <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Katie-Kim" target="_blank">TpT store</a> and a <a href="http://www.teachersnotebook.com/shop/KatieKim" target="_blank">TN store</a>. I actually started with the stores first, based on encouragement from a coworker. The blog evolved from there.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
3. How long have you been teaching? </span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;">I am about to start my 9th year of teaching middle school math.</span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">4. What songs would be on the soundtrack of your life? (Stole this from Divide and Conquer, but I love it!)</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I'd have to go with a mix of *NSYNC, Mariah, Britney, and a little Bon Jovi.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
5. Do you have a favorite teacher from your days in school?</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I do <i>(Ms. Gonzalez, my 7th and 8th grade language arts teacher)</i> and I actually have the pleasure of working with her now. <b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
6. How would you describe the morale at your school?</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> We're a small faculty, so we are pretty close. We are normally very positive and make each other laugh all the time<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">

<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
7. Favorite decade? (80's, 90's etc...)</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I'd have to go with the 90's. I love good old 90's sitcoms and pop music<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
8. Do you speak a second or third language? Which one?</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> No, I do not. My husband speaks Korean though!</span></div>

9. Favorite sport? Favorite team?</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I'm a basketball girl. <i>(I coach girl's team at my school. We are back-to-back undefeated champions<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i> My favorite teams are Duke Men's Basketball and the NY Knicks. I'm also a big NY Yankee fan.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
10. Ever said "never" and then had to eat your words. (Ex: I will never teach middle school. HA! I am there!)</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I used to say I would never eat sushi, but now I's obsessed with it<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">
11. Dog or cat lover?</span></b> To be honest, I'm not much of a pet person. If I had to choose, I'd go with a kitten.</div>

My students have 4 grade sheets glued into the beginning of their notebooks, one for each marking period. It's my way of making sure they keep track of their grades. Last year, I had way too many lines on my grade sheet:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCYgd-SM2f0hg4iwhyIk7emm8ulWPsn8spA9sfl7u9DTVEuZowoouCps9cWqlXz7DHrHTFG0Ln39kiQXDp4f8DgMJb2i8WKArfMGCc4BgUJCafvTAEi6yVRzJwSxn4tUmjLtrIwBGI0rh8/s1600/grade+sheet.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCYgd-SM2f0hg4iwhyIk7emm8ulWPsn8spA9sfl7u9DTVEuZowoouCps9cWqlXz7DHrHTFG0Ln39kiQXDp4f8DgMJb2i8WKArfMGCc4BgUJCafvTAEi6yVRzJwSxn4tUmjLtrIwBGI0rh8/s400/grade+sheet.JPG" height="400" width="295" /></a></div>
<br />
I mean, I <b>never</b> give that many assignments in one marking period!<br />
<br />
So for this coming year, I cut down the amount of assignments and also got rid of the date column. I also changed the bottom up a bit. I added a space to keep track of missed homework assignments. I also included an equation for calculating their average each marking period. <i> (No matter how many times I demonstrated how to find it, the different weights confused so many of my students<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8MElTcyQb1zn0fHDzp5NeQA3ZgEHYWBD5vx_eF0D4b9tH6klSgXCrNyAjoNPyafqUEQHYZZ85p3MtX0vzDE-kDXimPe8zQBHaoaOeiOSE868Ds9cjsIHeBegv50iAkVHn0Rthh4evjnFh/s1600/Grade+Sheet-page-0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8MElTcyQb1zn0fHDzp5NeQA3ZgEHYWBD5vx_eF0D4b9tH6klSgXCrNyAjoNPyafqUEQHYZZ85p3MtX0vzDE-kDXimPe8zQBHaoaOeiOSE868Ds9cjsIHeBegv50iAkVHn0Rthh4evjnFh/s640/Grade+Sheet-page-0.jpg" height="640" width="492" /></a></div>
I like it much better. It's so much more practical!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I count the notebook as 1 test grade for the marking period. I tell my students that this is my "gift" to them. As long as they keep their notebooks up-to-date and have all of the required elements, it should be an easy 100<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> Of course, not everyone takes advantage of this "gift". I'm hopeful that the few 7th graders who <b>really </b>struggled with maintaining their notebooks this year will improve as 8th graders.<br />
<br />
This past year, I used this rubric that I found on <a href="http://frogsandcupcakes.blogspot.com/2011/09/mathscience-notebooking-part-5.html" target="_blank">this great blog</a> to grade my students' notebooks each marking period:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxxOe-a5TNv3TDMNbZMjitluO27kL-Oc3czKiHyOYlfJqqHw8PWP10TeueLJVSLnS2Q2WW35UwsbTDUUQSQ3RtMjyjO_wkcmTCRliahERjngqil7v1m1ricg4TNy91lEc9qKyfa5Stn4jg/s1600/rubric.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxxOe-a5TNv3TDMNbZMjitluO27kL-Oc3czKiHyOYlfJqqHw8PWP10TeueLJVSLnS2Q2WW35UwsbTDUUQSQ3RtMjyjO_wkcmTCRliahERjngqil7v1m1ricg4TNy91lEc9qKyfa5Stn4jg/s1600/rubric.JPG" height="400" width="326" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
While I liked the rubric, it really didn't fit all of my needs. It was a little too general and didn't include anything for my Math Dictionary section <i>(which some kids tended to skip out on)</i>. Each marking period as I went through my 100+ notebooks, I made a list of things to use on a new rubric. I found that some students had a hard time numbering the pages correctly. I also found lots of doodles and some work for other classes scattered throughout the notebooks. And, I was receiving some notebooks that were falling apart! Missing covers, lots of missing pages...it was a nightmare<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I want</span> my students to treat their interactive notebooks like a textbook; they are that important<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
So,in June, after my final notebook collection, I went through my list and created my own rubric. I divided the rubric into two main sections: Neatness & Organization and Required Elements. For Neatness & Organization, the main areas of focus are:
Handwriting, Doodles, Physical Condition of Notebook, and Section
Content. For Required Elements, the main areas of focus are: Beginning Pages, Notes, Miscellaneous, and Math Dictionary. Students can score a 1, 2, or 3 in each category for a total of 24 possible points. This rubric holds the kids much more accountable for every aspect of their notebook and is much more specific. I am really excited to use it! I will have them glue a copy of the rubric into the beginning of their notebooks again as a constant reminder of what is expected of them.<br />
<br />

Well, I did<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> I used Microsoft Word and made my own version. I personally think it is more visually appealing then the template I found and used last year. What do you think?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Don't get me wrong, I really like the Frayer Model:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6jtKom0lSmvp-MPbqnnjhbGL5iygv8p_NNljjxG01ofCPBqmtPFtQC-KxGR0AG1LAty-2xGk599v8blUApg4zLVhEIDjV40QqzUX4srw1u-A_Xu2Zl7HhYD5QEP2bHk4JXdtdCbTlJ36/s1600/frayer.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih6jtKom0lSmvp-MPbqnnjhbGL5iygv8p_NNljjxG01ofCPBqmtPFtQC-KxGR0AG1LAty-2xGk599v8blUApg4zLVhEIDjV40QqzUX4srw1u-A_Xu2Zl7HhYD5QEP2bHk4JXdtdCbTlJ36/s1600/frayer.JPG" height="400" width="321" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And, I like having a list of vocabulary words in the beginning of the section:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd-pFfEY-yUp3AFThz9BPkLVqNUY7VdfpifRBTvGa3JWfOKxC-9BBXAC9u2-y1NnzEAuwLkCjLV9jurS7OdqouPK7QRTiViAr6wAj8AChIzMWZ-W51dgpIyoStsZwRh3cuILUbuXdsMVs-/s1600/Grade+8+Math+Vocabulary+List.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd-pFfEY-yUp3AFThz9BPkLVqNUY7VdfpifRBTvGa3JWfOKxC-9BBXAC9u2-y1NnzEAuwLkCjLV9jurS7OdqouPK7QRTiViAr6wAj8AChIzMWZ-W51dgpIyoStsZwRh3cuILUbuXdsMVs-/s1600/Grade+8+Math+Vocabulary+List.png" height="400" width="308" /></a></div>
My real issue was with the order of the list. Last year, I really wanted to make the vocabulary section like a real dictionary. So, I listed all the vocab words alphabetically. It made sense then, but I soon regretted my decision. Students would end up completing vocabulary for units that we weren't in yet. It just didn't make sense.<br />
<br />
So, this year I reorganized my lists. The words are now in the order we will come across them. This will make it easier to check, too. Last year, I had to keep track of what number each class was up to when I collected notebooks. This year, students will be responsible for making sure all words are finished from any completed unit. I'm going to have them color-code each unit, just like we color-coded our Table of Contents this year. I'm excited for this change<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> I'm also thinking of creating my own Frayer template. I want to make my own "cooler looking" version. Has anyone made their own??<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDlZ2Bohoq2a58Thf2gmRveise4i1uDEdqW8W2UgJd-tt9D3ouRH5EKBy4-EwCNGU4T4I7ofGwnnxbsRa7Mmp8OHBzR9-5sb0lkI8EyeiEM5IsP68pe2ffc-jfQD1OhauA6sv-GePq-T8W/s1600/blog+signature.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDlZ2Bohoq2a58Thf2gmRveise4i1uDEdqW8W2UgJd-tt9D3ouRH5EKBy4-EwCNGU4T4I7ofGwnnxbsRa7Mmp8OHBzR9-5sb0lkI8EyeiEM5IsP68pe2ffc-jfQD1OhauA6sv-GePq-T8W/s1600/blog+signature.png" /></a></div>
<br />Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05943384324247559885noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-302767059767632748.post-73927244733472809962013-07-20T14:35:00.000-04:002013-07-20T14:40:05.698-04:00New & Improved Interactive Notebook Cover PagesI completed my new interactive notebook cover pages. And, I am very happy with how they turned out<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
Last year, I told the students to design their own cover pages. They had to include their name and class. I also asked them to write down their user name and password for our online textbook. Unfortunately, many kids did not do this. So, most didn't know their passwords.<br />
<br />
This year, I included a space for each student to write their user name and password for our online textbook site, as well as for ixl.com <i>(a nifty practice website my school subscribes to)</i>. I also added a link to my homework calendar <i>(which is a shared calendar with their English, science, and social studies teachers)</i>. This year there will be no excuses for not knowing any of these sites<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
I also included my <a href="http://msmathmadness.blogspot.com/2013/07/common-core-word-clouds.html" target="_blank">Common Core Word Stars</a> on the cover pages. Here's how they turned out:<br />

What do you include on your students' cover pages??<br />

I am adding a place for students to write online textbook and ixl.com user names and passwords. I also wanted to add a <b>cool </b>math graphic <i>(which can be hard to find)</i>. I came across these cool word clouds on TpT. They are really nice and are only $1.00 each, but I still decided to make my own. I wanted to change the shape and play around with the placement of words. So, I used <a href="http://www.tagxedo.com/app.html" target="_blank">Tagxedo</a> <i>(for the first time<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i>. It's free and so simple to use<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
All I did was copy and paste the common core standards for Grade 7, Grade 8 and Algebra I into Tagxedo. I played around with the orientation, font, and colors until I was satisfied.<br />
<br />
I have to say, I really love the results! Here they are:<br />
<br />
Grade 7:<br />

<br />
Remember me?<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
I cannot believe how quickly this school year has flown by <i>(I mean, the state test starts <b>TOMORROW<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span></b>)</i>. What's even more shocking is that I have not even posted <b>ONCE</b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />
<br />
Between implementing 2 new textbooks, starting interactive notebooking with all 4 of my classes, flipping my algebra class for 10 weeks, finishing my Master's <i>(finally<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span>)</i>, and maintaining my original blog (<a href="http://cookbookmeals.com/">http://cookbookmeals.com</a>), this poor blog was completely neglected.<br />
<br />
The good news is that I <u><b>LOVE</b></u> my interactive notebooks, as do my students<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> I will have lots to post in the near future<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> I can't say when that will be, but I promise to share everything I have incorporated this school year with you all.<br />
<br />
I hope your school years have been just as great. Can you believe that the summer is just around the corner?<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span> <br />
<br />

I should be getting ready for bed...not writing a blog post! I'm very tired after a day of meetings and finishing up my classroom. But, I wanted to share what I decided to do as a quick opening activity tomorrow. Each student in my homeroom will have to tell me 1 thing about their self. What they tell me will depend on what they roll using the dice on my Smartboard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3dM-aEYLulJuQyLx32xk2Hr6WLRUVh0eNVXKfUVWsWM9IWtczcgysTSOPBPzh_98RUZjH_dR2y9fz1eVnXKDXJbRK6ymw-S1Gi0q-XK0gwVXyMuG-v_TRSqlclVTP3EEQFbxC73z6A2Pa/s1600/Welcome+Dice.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3dM-aEYLulJuQyLx32xk2Hr6WLRUVh0eNVXKfUVWsWM9IWtczcgysTSOPBPzh_98RUZjH_dR2y9fz1eVnXKDXJbRK6ymw-S1Gi0q-XK0gwVXyMuG-v_TRSqlclVTP3EEQFbxC73z6A2Pa/s640/Welcome+Dice.png" width="452" /></a></div>
<br />
The large die on the bottom is an interactive one. Students will come up to the Smartboard, roll the die <i>(by tapping it)</i>, and then share something depending on what they rolled. You can get the Notebook file in my stores: <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Back-to-School-Smartboard-Dice-Activity" target="_blank"><b>TpT</b></a> or <a href="http://www.teachersnotebook.com/product/KatieKim/back-to-school-smartboard-dice-activity" target="_blank"><b>TN</b></a>. It is a short activity, but I only have an hour with my homeroom tomorrow and I have to give out and explain<b> </b><u><b>a lot</b></u> of forms. I also need to assign lockers in that time. I found this cute worksheet for them to fill out if we have any free time tomorrow or when I'm collecting <b>all </b>of the forms on Thursday.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh3UuuNGRN8nq6-3gYiqcIzzslX6dIonD9ZJDTgyesxiben6Jtq5Qf_tEEjHr2avJIRpiP6OEJYIUYDVt2cJ2qUCTYcKpXx1Odo5Ow0RdIQfI9V3MeQRevcBl110GAdVC1qnAPzruUOVjG/s1600/beginningoftheyearstudentlette.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh3UuuNGRN8nq6-3gYiqcIzzslX6dIonD9ZJDTgyesxiben6Jtq5Qf_tEEjHr2avJIRpiP6OEJYIUYDVt2cJ2qUCTYcKpXx1Odo5Ow0RdIQfI9V3MeQRevcBl110GAdVC1qnAPzruUOVjG/s640/beginningoftheyearstudentlette.png" width="494" /></a></div>
I think it's very cute and simple enough. I like the idea of having them trace their hand on the back and then see if it grew in June. You can download the worksheet <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Beginning-of-the-Year-Student-Letter" target="_blank"><b>here</b></a>.<br />
<br />
Hope you all have/had a great first day with your students<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">!</span><br />

<br />
I'm planning and hoping to keep up with this once school starts...we shall see! This week's is a simple foldable about the types of slope.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0QmnPRKGbx5zcixIEwhZgE0SyL_15hlwY6uSHIr06SMpHMBEP9npR6t_8w4TX8AZvBLURbdCRmwEf4M4MmP8A6EBaeTKvXO86yYAG6CYZD0Dk5ZcvLMRMSfYBE6jgvlRajApQPFkPJ8yi/s1600/Types+of+Slope+Foldable.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0QmnPRKGbx5zcixIEwhZgE0SyL_15hlwY6uSHIr06SMpHMBEP9npR6t_8w4TX8AZvBLURbdCRmwEf4M4MmP8A6EBaeTKvXO86yYAG6CYZD0Dk5ZcvLMRMSfYBE6jgvlRajApQPFkPJ8yi/s640/Types+of+Slope+Foldable.png" width="640" /></a></div>
I plan on having students draw a picture of each type of slope onto a small piece of graph paper. They will glue the correct picture under each flap. They will also find the actual slope of each line. You can get this foldable at either of my stores: <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Types-of-Slope-Foldable" target="_blank"><b>TpT</b></a> or <a href="http://www.teachersnotebook.com/product/KatieKim/types-of-slope-foldable" target="_blank"><b>TN</b></a>.<br />
<br />
Hope you are all having a great Labor Day!<br />
